Resonant Dialogues

Project duration: March 2024 - present
Principle investigator: Cathy Lane
Partnerships: RIZQ Art Initiative, Abu Dhabi

Resonant Dialogues explores sonic perspectives on conflict and trauma, through international exhibitions and events.

Developed from the exhibition Listening for Traces: Conflict Sound and Memory (RIZQ Art Initiative, 2024) within the sound and environment CRiSAP research theme.

So far, the Resonant Dialogues project has produced impact through:

  • an online symposium attended by 142 participants
  • an exhibition.

We enabled engagement between global attendees and artists, opening up important dialogues about the response to conflict through sound.

Key issues investigated

  • How the impact of sound in conflict scenarios affects landscapes, communities and bodies.
  • How sound art can challenge spectacular narratives by focusing on noise, affect and non-verbal registers.
  • How sound and memory are closely linked to well-being and the aftereffects of post war trauma.

Outcomes

Online symposium

The symposium (14 March 2024) explored sonic perspectives on war, peace and the unending conversation between them. It featured 4 pairs of artists sharing and discussing topics including:

  • methodologies they used to create work with people who have traumatic stories to share
  • their experiences of creating sound work in difficult and unstable circumstances
  • how artists have approached dealing with conflict and war through sound art (relationship between sound and the military)
  • their attempts to use sound as a way of creating understanding in post conflict situations.

Listening for Traces: Conflict Sound and Memory

CRiSAP member Cathy Lane curated the exhibition, Listening for Traces: Conflict Sound and Memory (23 February - 20 March 2024), for RIZQ Art Initiative, Abu Dhabi.

It featured films, sound installations and sonic sculptures of over 14 international artists. They examined conflict by exploring its cyclical nature, impact on memory and lasting effects on people and landscapes.

More to explore

  • Three archival black and white images collaged together. One features 2 people playing music. One of them is sat next to a piano and playing the guitar and the other is holding another instrument. Another image shows a flyer for an event called “Music/Context” and features an illustration of a metallic fish. The final image is a black and white film strip.
