Afua Hirsch is an award-winning writer, broadcaster and Sunday Times bestselling author whose work explores the intersections of race, identity and social justice. Over the course of her decade-spanning career, she has worked with numerous globally renowned institutions, including The New York Times, National Geographic, British Vogue and The Guardian, where she is currently a senior correspondent and columnist.
She has published 4 books: Look Again; Decolonising My Body; Brit(ish): On Race, Identity and Belonging, which received the Royal Society of Literature Jerwood Prize; and Equal to Everything, a children’s book about the first female President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.
Her work extends beyond the written word. She is the host of the BBC documentary Africa Rising and co-host of the acclaimed series Enslaved alongside Samuel L. Jackson. In addition, she hosted Audible’s 6-part series We Need to Talk About the British Empire and currently co-hosts the Legacy history podcast with Peter Frankopan.
Afua’s career has played a pivotal role in amplifying voices that have historically been marginalised in Western popular media. She continues this work as the founder of Born In Me, an independent London-based production company dedicated to telling underrepresented stories. Since 2019, she has served as the Wallis Annenberg Chair in Journalism and Communication at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
She is also active in the design industry as co-owner of the ethical clothing brand Sika, handmade in Ghana. Her interdisciplinary research and writing have established her as one of the most prominent voices on the enduring effects of colonisation and the role of social justice today.
