The Camden Schools Art Biennale is designed to promote creativity, inclusivity, and sustainability across Camden. Established by Camden Council, Central Saint Martins and Camden Learning, the biennale provides a unique platform for every school across the borough of Camden. By nurturing partnerships between local schools, cultural institutions and artists around King's Cross, the biennale provides a platform to enhance arts education within the curriculum. It leverages partnerships across education, government, and the arts sector, to create opportunities for young people to develop artistic skills, explore creative career paths, and contribute to the cultural fabric of the borough.

The Camden Schools Arts Biennale, which launched as a pilot in summer 2024, is an innovative collaboration between Central Saint Martins, Camden Council, and Camden Learning. Designed to become a central part of Camden’s cultural calendar, the biennale aims to highlight the creative potential of students from across the borough, providing a platform for artistic expression and development.

At the heart of the biennale is a week-long exhibition at CSM's Lethaby Gallery, featuring hundreds of artworks created by students from every key stage—primary, secondary, special education, and A-Level. This exhibition, free and open to the public, is supported by a range of events and workshops developed for families, young people, and educators. The biennale’s outreach work includes teacher training programmes and direct collaboration between artists and schools, enhancing the quality of art education and raising creative standards across Camden.

The initiative also aims to expand Camden’s rich arts ecosystem by building connections between schools, local businesses, and cultural organisations, offering students and teachers new opportunities to engage with the arts and develop valuable skills.

Aims

  • Enhancing arts education in Camden schools by raising the profile of the arts curriculum and fostering new opportunities for artistic engagement.
  • Showcasing Camden as a centre of creative excellence by providing a prominent platform for students' work to reach wider audiences.
  • Inspiring students to consider careers in art, design, and other creative fields through exposure to professionals and creative networks.
  • Strengthening connections between schools, arts organisations, and local businesses, building a collaborative arts ecosystem.

Initiatives and Activities

Camden Schools Arts Outreach Work

Bringing together students from across the borough, this initiative focuses on co-creating art that reflects the cultural and social fabric of Camden. Professional artists work closely with schools to mentor students, helping them develop their artistic talents and build confidence in their creative abilities.

Public Art Exhibition at Lethaby Gallery

The biennale culminates in a week-long public exhibition, showcasing artworks from every key stage of learning. This event highlights the creative achievements of students and provides a platform for schools to share their work with the public.

Teacher Training and Professional Development

In collaboration with artists and cultural institutions, the biennale offers training and workshops for teachers to help them integrate arts into their teaching practices. This initiative raises the standard of arts education across the borough and empowers educators with new skills and resources.

Outreach and Arts Partnerships

Students participate in gallery visits, workshops, and artist-led projects through partnerships with renowned cultural institutions like the October Gallery and Quentin Blake Centre. These activities provide valuable exposure to the arts and create lasting connections between schools and the broader creative community.

Placemaking outcomes

More Accessible

Making art education and creative opportunities accessible to all students. Over 5,000 people attended the gallery exhibition over the 7-day run, including around 90 school classes.

More Equitable

The biennale ensures equal access to resources and opportunities in the arts. Outreach activities were targeted at schools that did not have specialist arts provision, with 23 schools across the borough identified for outreach work.

More Inclusive

The initiative included works by all schools across the borough, including specialist schools and hospital schools

More Sustainable

Encouraging sustainable practices in art-making, such as teaching students to work with recycled materials and consider environmental impacts in their creative processes.

More Innovative

Fostering partnerships and engaging local stakeholders, the biennale finds new ways to celebrate artistic practices across Camden’s schools and creates new pathways into arts education.

More Prosperous

Building strong links between schools, cultural organisations, and businesses, the biennale helps to support the growth of Camden’s creative economy, showcasing students pathways to further opportunities in the arts.

Nurturing collaborative and sustained engagement

Engaging Diverse Stakeholders

Approach: The biennale collaborates with local businesses, arts organisations, and professionals to create a rich, inclusive arts ecosystem where students and teachers can engage with the creative industries first hand.

Commitment to Inclusivity and Accessibility

Approach: Through free events, specifically targeted outreach programmes, and teacher training, the biennale ensures that a wide range of students can participate and develop their artistic skills.

Sustaining Resources and Funding

Approach: Through partnerships with organisations like Camden Council, John Lyon’s Charity, and King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership, the initiative aims to create long-term sustainability and impact. These collaborations provide the financial, logistical and partnership support needed to expand the biennale's reach.

Legacy

The Camden Schools Arts Biennale will influence Camden’s cultural and educational landscape. By integrating creative expression within schools, the biennale fosters continuous engagement for students while building connections between schools, local cultural institutions, and the creative industries. Through its focus on enhancing arts education, it provides professional development for teachers and collaborative projects that enrich the curriculum. The approach helps build a more equitable cultural environment in Camden, where diverse perspectives are celebrated. The biennale also drives local economic growth by encouraging students to explore careers in the creative industries, reinforcing Camden’s reputation as a hub for artistic talent and innovation. The focus from the pilot programme is to cement a sustainable initiative that celebrates local talent and nurtures creativity to drive progress across the borough.
