The Alumni of Colour Association (AoCA) welcomed its network to its second event of the year: the Talent on Film screening.
After an amazing response to a call out back in September, the AoCA committee members carefully selected 9 film works from talented UAL alumni.
Ranging from music videos, trailers, and short films plus a special feature: Windrush75: Forging Ahead, a documentary commissioned by London College of Communication, UAL lecturer Maureen Salmon, which had its premiere during Black History Month. The documentary commemorates the 75th anniversary of Windrush and celebrates the Windrush generation and its descendants.
The evening started with an opportunity to network before AoCA president Linett Kamala welcomed the attendees to the screenings.
The pieces shown were:
- Transitional Spaces (original extended version), by Annette Fernando.
- Seven (music video), by Jordan Williams (AURA-KL).
- In A Drop (trailer), by Valeria Weerasinghe
- The Good Neighbour, (trailer & clip/buy or rent full film) by Jonathan Reid-Edwards
- Waves Crashing on Concrete Streets, by Kalisha Piper-Cheddie
- Hidden Treasure, by Maira Hamid
- Needled, by Samar Zia
- Going Home, by Walid Bhatt
- Another Beautiful Dream (trailer), by Clare Chun-yu Liu
Chiara Vicini, a member of the AoCA committee, held panel discussions with the respective filmmakers, which resulted in interesting conversations around the artists’ processes and practices.
Our grand finale was the screening of Windrush75: Forging Ahead – a 20-minute documentary created by alumni and students and commissioned and produced by Maureen, where 3 young artists discuss their connections to the Caribbean and Windrush heritage. This film was first presented on October 17, 2023, at Peckhamplex as part of the Black History Month programme. Linett spoke with Mike Williams (BA Graphic and Media Design, LCC), about his role as a music engineer for the documentary and his general experience being part of the crew.
