UAL Global is excited to announce its second cross-university programme for London Design Festival 2022: Ageing Societies: A Global Response – a 3-day online symposium

This year’s event builds on the success of last year’s Together in Europe symposium by showcasing a broader range of global perspectives and celebrating the wide breadth of international collaboration taking place across UAL.

Early planning discussions for the event amongst members of UAL’s Regional Groups identified key themes of healthy ageing and wellbeing as well as outlining ambitions to involve international activity.

As a result, an online symposium ‘Ageing Societies: A Global Response’ was developed and UAL’s International Relations Unit has collaborated with international partners from Europe, Asia, North America and Australasia to bring together a wealth of expert voices.

You can join the event between 20-22 September as our panels of academics, industry professionals and UAL Alumni come together to explore creative approaches and solutions to a truly global issue.

Day 1 - Embracing the Silver Economy and Opportunities from Ageing

09:00-11:00, 20 September 2022

The first day will set the scene for the symposium by challenging age-related myths and exploring the opportunities associated with an elder population in terms of their contribution to the economy and wider society.

We will hear from academics at international partners Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Singapore) and RMIT (Melbourne), as well as a local UK business owner (UAL Alumnus) and ‘Gerontologist’ based here at UAL.

Day 2 – Spaces for wellbeing and urban regeneration

09:30-11:00 & 12:30-14:00, 21 September 2022

Communities and wellbeing are central to the theme for day 2, as we explore the important role of spaces in supporting an ageing population.

We will have two panel sessions to cover the broader remit of this theme and to accommodate global time zones; with speakers joining from Toronto Metropolitan University, Monash and RMIT Universities in Melbourne, NAFA (Singapore) and China.

We are also looking forward to welcoming the perspective of a local UK poet and UAL academic with a focus on the relationship between blindness and architecture.

Day 3 – Ageing: Future visions and speculations

09:00-11:00, 22 September 2022

Our day 3 panel will focus on the technological, design and scientific innovations that will impact the future of our ageing societies, concluding our 3 days of discussion with future-facing speculations.

We will once again welcome speakers from valued partners NAFA (Singapore), Monash and RMIT (Melbourne), a University of Sheffield academic who has strong links with Japan and a former UAL student who has worked locally with AgeUK.
