Could we reimagine ageing as something that is so much more than skin deep and which we should not seek to fix, but to celebrate?

— Dr Hannah Zeilig, Reader in Arts and Health at London College of Fashion.

The 3-day symposium focused on three key themes: Silver Economy, Urban Regeneration and Spaces for Wellbeing and Ageing Futures. Discussion ranged from the significance of accessible design in multi-generational communities to the arguably positive correlation between ageing, depopulation and sustainable living. The post-event evaluation highlights the key insights and provocations that emerged from each panel session in both written and visual formats. Recordings to each panel session are available here.

Age accommodation should not be a specialist, but a mainstream issue. A holistic approach that can augment both new and renovated buildings, and improve the quality of life for everyone in an inclusive way.

— Professor Nigel Bertram, Professor of Architecture at Monash University.

The event was a real celebration of UAL’s International partners and global reach, as reflected by a diverse range of panelists and attendees joining from the UK, Australia, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Nigeria, Spain, Greece and the USA.

Closer to home, the talents of UAL staff, students and alumni all played a significant part in shaping the symposium - from Alumni speakers to the engagement of current staff and students to contribute report writing, illustration and brand identity.

"We need to work creatively within our communities with the thinking that this could be me one day.

— Dr Keely Macarow, Coordinator of Postgraduate Research and Creative Care at RMIT University
