Biography

Alicia Paz's paintings, collages and sculptures deal primarily with identity.

In recent years, Paz has focused on the female figure. Inhabiting fantastical and exotic landscapes, her feminine subjects become fused and combined with organic life. Strange and unsettling visions of tree-women and monster-women also represent the fusion of the subject with painting itself. Paz often depicts amphibian or plant-like figures ‘weeping’ pigment, their limbs, hair and various ornamental possessions mud-caked and dripping.

Alicia Paz has had several solo exhibitions in the United Kingdom, France, Mexico and Argentina. In 2010 a semi-retrospective exhibit of her work was featured in L.A.C. Sigéan (France) in collaboration with FRAC Languedoc-Roussillon.

Paz has participated in international painting surveys such as Slow Magic, Contemporary Approaches to Painting at the Bluecoat Gallery (Liverpool) and Heute. Spektrum. Malerei. at Kunstmuseum Magdeburg (Germany).

Other solo projects include Drawing Now at Carrousel du Louvre with Galerie Dukan and Hourdequin (Paris), Pippy Houldsworth Gallery (London) and Ruth Benzacar Gallery (Buenos Aires).
