Biography

Although painting is central to his practice, Alex Veness also makes work using a self-built scanner-camera and is a founder member of Class Wargames, an international collective of artists, film makers and academics that enacts public performances and produces films and publications for national and international exhibitions and events.

The objects in the paintings in Alex Veness's paintings are modest everyday items or plants. Veness presents these subjects as the focus for slow and meditative paintings in which absence and presence compete, and banality is reevaluated and promoted as a condition. These paintings rely on fundamental contradictions: they are both witty and deadly serious, blending historical and contemporary painting forms and attitudes.

His work has been exhibited widely, including Tate Liverpool, Camden Arts Centre, The Latvian National Museum of Art, The Centre for Contemporary Art and the Natural World, Exeter and The Hermitage, Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Alex graduated from The Royal College of Art in 1994 with an MA in Painting, and from University of Westminster in 2002 with an MA (Distinction) in Hypermedia Studies.
