To celebrate Post-Grad Community’s 10-year anniversary, we are bringing students together to create the Family Heirloom - a collaborative tapestry combining the diverse artistic practices and perspectives of UAL's postgraduate community.

The open call for the Heirloom is for postgraduate students and alumni to design a patch of fabric based on a reflection of themselves during their time at UAL.

During UAL's Activities Week 2024, we were invited to host a workshop where students could learn a new skill and contribute to the Post-Grad Family Heirloom.

We arranged the event to be hosted by Abigail Richard (MA Design for Art Direction, London College of Communication). Abby was the perfect event facilitator, her final project Precious consisted of creating narrative and storytelling around donated clothing through creating beaded shopping tags that were mini notebooks for people donating clothing to add the story of their donation to.

Abby’s proposed workshop idea for the Family Heirloom was for participants to create ‘invisible threads’. Each person was provided with a mirror which they would see their own reflection on and attempt to draw their own portrait without looking at the fabric they were tracing on. This created a series of abstract and varied self-portraits which participants were encouraged to embroider and bead onto.

If you’d like to respond to our open call and design a patch for the Family Heirloom you just need to register via Microsoft Forms (or contact Catriona Mahmoud if you’re an alumni or do not have a Microsoft account).

Students can also collect fabric kits from any UAL library.
