Sam first found out about UAL during a visit to the UK Education Fair in Hanoi, Vietnam. After making the move to London, she offers her tips for others to make the most of their time at UAL.

“Location, reputation, or ranking were never my top priorities when I was exploring options to study abroad. As long as I found a course that fulfilled my desire for knowledge and academic challenges, I knew I’d be happy. The fact that I've ended up at London College of Communication (LCC), one of UAL’s six Colleges – not to mention in the city of London – is far beyond my original expectations!

LCC is located in Elephant and Castle, an area in south east London. There are lots of interesting arts and culture venues nearby, but my favourites are the Imperial War Museum, Tate Modern and the Bishopsgate Institute. At UAL, my favourite facilities are the libraries in LCC and Central Saint Martins; they have huge sections of books on my favourite topics, and the T Tower at LCC has the most gorgeous sunset views.

One of the most exciting times I’ve had since starting the course just a few months ago is the group project we’re working on now – the Off-site Show project.

"Studying at UAL encourages you to explore and find out what you enjoy. I love the freedom to create, whether it’s through designing a book cover, making a movie or writing an essay."

I chose to study BA (Hons) Design Management because it's a great balance between practical and theoretical studies, as well as giving you exposure to both creative and business management practices. As a multidisciplinary course, it’s equipped me with the skills and flexibility I need to design my own career path.

The bonds I have with my course mates are very strong. One of my favourite things we do as a collective is our annual summer field trip. We went to Istanbul in our first year and, in our second year, we visited Berlin to see the Berlin Biennale and DMY International Design Festival. The best learning adventures often take place outside of the classroom, so go out and explore. Get involved. Go to events, make friends, join societies, run for Student Council... make the most out of your time as a student!

"As one of the most dynamic and multicultural cities in the world, London is the best classroom. You can learn about almost everything from politics, culture, history and art just by taking a walk in the city."

Settling in London can be quite overwhelming, but UAL and the Arts Students Union are always doing their best to support international students. If you have any questions or worries, don’t hesitate to contact them.”
