Are you interested in studying fashion and need to get your portfolio together? Whilst revisiting “How to start a career in fashion” for inspiration you should also consider our Fashion Folio course. Stephanie Uhart attended Fashion Folio in 2015, a highly intensive fashion programme for students to produce a portfolio in application to undergraduate and postgraduate studies, employment or personal development. Stephanie completed the course and progressed onto BA Fashion Design with Knitwear.

“Fashion Folio really broke me and put me back together. It was an incredible experience that made me challenge myself in an entirely new way. I really thought I knew what I was doing but Fashion Folio helped me step outside of my comfort zone and see my own work from a different perspective.”

Where are you from and what is your favourite thing about it?

I am from Chile and my favourite thing about it has always been the nature, you can go from the desert to the beach to the mountains, all in one country and made for a great place to grow up in.

Why did you choose to take a folio course, what were your expectations and how were these met?

I chose to take Fashion Folio because I felt like I was missing the necessary skills and guidance needed to understand and put my work together in a way that would showcase the entire process of what I was doing.

Did the course challenge you in a way you were not expecting and how so?

Yes very much so, Fashion Folio really broke me and put me back together. It was an incredible experience that made me challenge myself in an entirely new way. I really thought I knew what I was doing but Fashion Folio helped me step outside of my comfort zone and see my own work from a different perspective.

What did you do after completing your folio course and how did the folio course factor into your progression, did you stay on path or do something completely different?

After completing Fashion Folio, I went onto BA Fashion Design with Knitwear through an internal interview held for Fashion Folio students. I did stay on path, after a couple of weeks of Fashion Folio I realised that knitwear would work really well with my aesthetic and focused on going in that direction all throughout the course.

What have been your highlights during your undergraduate/postgraduate course?

The highlights of my undergraduate course have for sure been all the incredible and talented people that I’ve been able to meet, work and collaborate with. Being a part of Central Saint Martins really opens up a whole new world and I have had the time and place to find myself as a creative too.

Tell us a bit about your next steps, do you have any upcoming projects planned?

I am focusing on continuing to create and I plan on using this confusing time to further explore the ideas that I developed throughout my final collection while collaborating with other creatives too.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about taking a folio course, what are the benefits to taking the course prior to applying to an undergraduate/postgraduate course?

I would definitely recommend Fashion Folio; it is an excellent way of easing into the craziness that can be an undergraduate course. It is an experience that will challenge you but also bring out the best in your work and help define your aesthetic and path.

What do you believe is integral to the work of a creative in any discipline?

In my opinion it is integral to take some time and distance to really look at things from different perspectives and listen to yourself. I often find that when I am working without taking some distance from my own work, I tend to miss important things that I could have worked on more thoroughly or changed.

We have a few full-time folio preparation courses to discover and choose from including those in art and design, graphics, photography and textiles.
