The Shining Screening and Archive Handling Session (2023)

As part of Post-Grad Community’s 10 Year Anniversary celebrations this year, we decided to revisit past PGC activity in a selectrospective of event highlights over the last decade.

Last October we collaborated with the Archives and Special Collections Centre (ASCC) based at London College of Community for a screening of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining (1980), followed by an opportunity for postgraduates to visit the Kubrick Archive and explore some of the key items in the collection related to the film.

The Life of Staney Kubrick and Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition at the Design Museum

Post-Grad Community has had a long history of Kubrick themed activity that we’ve enjoyed exploring our the last decade.

In 2015 we hosted a panel talk for postgraduates featuring Jan Harlan, Kubrick’s executive producer, and Rick Senat, former Warner Brothers Head of Business. In 2019 we hosted a mixer for postgraduates and took them to The Design Museum’s seminal Stanley Kubrick: The Exhibition.

With these events so successful and well engaged with by postgraduates, we felt a revisiting of Kubrick was in order, particularly in this celebratory year.

2023 Screening and Archive Handling Session

To mark the Halloween season we hosted a screening of The Shining with ASCC and the Kubrick Archive. Following the screening students had the opportunity to explore materials selected from the archive.

Notable materials included costumes such as Danny’s red shoes and Wendy’s cardigan, Jack’s manuscript featured in English and Italian, as well as photos from the set and Kubrick’s notes in the margins of his copy of Stephen King’s The Shining.

You can view photos of the event below - plus all Kubrick Archive material is available to view for UAL students in person at LCC.
