The Post-Grad Family Heirloom is a large-scale collaborative artwork being collaborated on by current postgraduate students and alumni from all UAL colleges.

Each student or alumni can submit a 40cmX40cm patchwork of art that reflects themselves and will be stitched together at the end of the 23/24 academic year in a tapestry making event hosted by London College of Fashion’s Lucy Orta.

On Monday 20th November, 2023, Post-Grad Community held its first (of many) drop-in crafting sessions at Central Saint Martins. This 6-hour event was an opportunity for post-graduates from all colleges to come together and learn more about the project, start working on their patchwork, and discover a new skill in crafting.

The Central Saint Martins Library loaned us a fantastic array of books on everything from British textile design and knitting guides, to sewing skills and abstract fabric weaving.

Students were encouraged to contribute their own skills and disciplines to their work such as illustration, sculpture, and mixed media, while many were taught embroidery and knitting skills for the first time.

The success of the event has inspired the group to continue coming together at different colleges in order to continue working on their patchwork, along with the potential to bring their own projects to each session in the future.

You can view photos from the event below.
