Our climate work at the institute
Climate change is not only a scientific or political challenge. It is also a storytelling challenge. Too often, climate stories focus on catastrophe, distance and individual guilt. Our work explores stories that are honest about the stakes while creating space for agency, solidarity and action.
We offer insights from across the narrative change space, as well as tools and space for experimentation.
Lab: Climate change
In spring 2023, we partnered with the National Theatre. The aim was to bring climate activists and narratives strategists and campaigners to dramaturgs there. The theatre collective Opening Statement had been working on a participatory work, Horizon.
Horizon is a one-to-one performance about climate change and the future. An audience member spends half an hour with a teenage actor. Their conversation becomes the performance. It makes the climate emergency personal, immediate and hard to ignore.
The Lab asked a key question: how might the work have more impact without simply thinking about reach.
