Camberwell graduate wins second prize at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Awards 2021

Camberwell graduate David Haines has won the Second Prize at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2021.
The prize is known for its promotion and celebration of excellence in contemporary drawing practice.
Out of the thousands of submissions, 114 works by 99 artists and makers were shortlisted by an expert panel. This year the panel was made up of; Sheela Gowda, Artist; Simon Groom, Director of Modern and Contemporary Art, National Galleries Scotland; and Zoé Whitley, Director of Chisenhale Gallery, London.
Awards worth £27,000 were given out to five entrants. David won second prize, worth £5,000, for Dark Balloons, a hyper-realistic pencil drawing of 15 balloons spelling the words “Things fall apart”.

Dark Balloons
David’s series of dark balloons began during the lockdown. Appearing to be lit by the flash of a camera, shiny balloons emerge against a blank wall.
The balloon messages vary from hinting at cancelled lockdown celebrations to pessimistic messages, reflecting the isolation of a “new normal”.
