Biography

Stuart was the Provost and Deputy Director of the London School of Economics from 2013 to 2015, and the Vice Chancellor and Warden of Durham University from 2015 to 2021. Since November 2024, Stuart has served as the Chair of the North East Ambulance Service, NHS Foundation Trust. He is also the Senior Independent Governor of Derwentside College in Consett. From 2018-2022 Stuart was on the Board of BALTIC, the leading contemporary arts venue in northeast England.

Stuart’s academic career centred around issues in international development, including the politics of public service provision in India. Stuart is currently thinking about how best to progress mutual learning across ambulance and paramedicine service providers in England and India. Some of that thinking happens when he is riding his road bike in the Tyne Valley and Northumberland hills. Stuart’s BA and PhD degrees are from Cambridge University, where he taught from 1988 to 1999 after a short but fulfilling period working at Syracuse University in the USA.
