Digital Print On Textiles Short Course

Course description

This beginners course will teach you how to design and print using a large format digital printer. Photoshop and Illustrator will be used to manipulate images and the resulting designs will be printed on both digital and sublimation printers.

You will be given an insight into techniques currently used in industry and will finish the course with a range of design samples printed on a variety of textiles. You will be able to print for both fashion and interiors. The aim is to encourage students to produce work that will make a unique addition to a portfolio and offer a new dimension to their existing textile abilities.

Entry requirements: You will need some basic knowledge of working with Photoshop and Illustrator on Mac computers.

Level: Beginners.

Students only have access to the print room and printing facilities during allocated class hours.

  • As long as you attend a minimum of 80% of your classes, we will provide you with a certificate of attendance.
  • We always recommend you attend all of the classes so that you get the most out of the experience!
  • Certificates are great to compliment your cv.

Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older.

Booking:

Your course place is confirmed once you have booked online using a credit or debit card. There is no deadline for booking. Places are offered on a first come, first served basis, and all courses have a maximum number of students. We suggest you book early to avoid disappointment.

Details

Topics covered include:

  • Using a digital printer as well as using heat transfer
  • Sublimation print techniques
  • Use of appropriate textiles will be discussed
  • Whenever possible, the course will include a visit to an exhibition to look at designers' works

Materials

Please bring with you to the first session:

  • Sketchbook with personal visual references and inspirations, such as drawings, photographs, cut-outs from magazines etc
  • Fabric swatches that inspire you.
  • A USB memory stick for saving your work.

IMPORTANT - Adobe ID Login for Short Course Students

Students will need to create an account with Adobe (unless you already have one) in order to access the Adobe suite at the college – instructions are included below. You will need to use a personal email address to create this. If you already have an account with Adobe, please make sure you bring your login details with you on the first day of the course.

Please note:

  • The software will only be accessible when logged into a UAL networked computer
  • The same account can be used outside of the University, but software will only be accessible through a personal paid subscription that students will need to set up independently
  • You can still create an account on the day but doing this beforehand will save time and avoid delays to the start of the class.
  • If you already have an Adobe ID/ subscription you can use this on your short course rather than setting up a new account.
  • During this course you may be using Adobe Photoshop. If you do not already have Photoshop, you can sign up for a free 7 day trial of Adobe Creative Cloud. Please note a credit card is required to register for the free trial. The subscription must be cancelled on the date provided by Adobe if you do not wish to continue onto a paid account.

To create an account students will need to:

  • Go to Adobe Sign in page.
  • Select ‘Create an account’
  • Enter your details and select ‘Create account’
