Knitwear For Fashion Intermediate Short Course

Course description

This unique course offers you the chance to create a complete project in knitwear design. You will gain hands-on experience of a range of fashion knitwear techniques, including pattern calculation, creating a variety of trims and garment assembly on the machine, the over locker and linker. You can then choose to accumulate your learned techniques into a final design and garment.

Who should take this course?

It would be ideally suited to those who wish to extend their textile knowledge into a fashion context, and who would benefit from portfolio-building skills.

Entry requirements

Students must have prior experience of a knitting machine, ideally having completed the beginners course - or similar.

Prior experience of garment making is not needed.

 

Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older

  • Our tutors will explain things in easy to understand, accessible English. If they need to use any special terminology they will make sure they explain what they mean.  
  • New methods will be shown to students through live demonstrations, in a way that’s crystal clear and easy to understand.

A certificate of completion:  

  • You've put the work in so we want to make sure you have something to show for it!  
  • As long as you attend a minimum of 80% of your classes, we will provide you with a certificate of attendance.  
  • We always recommend you attend all of the classes so that you get the most out of the experience!  
  • Certificates are great to complement your cv.  

This course is scheduled to run on campus in a face-to-face delivery format. Please note that due to the ongoing pandemic situation this course may be adapted in line with UK government guidance or other operational requirements. This may include changing course location (to another UAL site), cancellation of the course, or moving part or all of the course online. In the event of any changes being required we will inform you as soon as possible and support you in any changes required. Please bear this in mind when making any travel, visa, or accommodation arrangements.

Materials

Please bring with you to the first session:

  • Tape measure
  • Scissors
  • Calculator
  • Notepad/Pencil
  • A selection of yarns of different weights and gauges - You do not need to bring in large amounts but should bring a good selection that you are inspired by.
  • Any ribbons, lace, net, fabrics, or other non- knitted trims to embellish your swatches
  • Any students wishing to use crochet or handknitting to embellish their samples can also bring crochet hooks / knitting needles, but please note that this is not a taught part of the course due to time constraints.

Please note that there will be a selection of basic yarns provided
