Course description

Course overview

This inspiring hands-on course provides an insight into a variety of textile print techniques, including transfer printing, screen printing, hand painting, metal foiling and flocking.

The course is project-based and designed to support the development of ideas and experimentation. Students will explore pattern, form, colour, design and repeats, working on both fabric and paper. There will be an opportunity to visit some of London’s shops, markets, museums, galleries and parks as areas of resource.

A range of different techniques and media will be demonstrated at the start of each day so that students can explore different processes. The outcome should be a portfolio filled with ideas, samples and potential collections.

Who this course is for

This course is suitable for students aged 16 to 18 with an interest in textile design.

It would be an excellent fit for students who might have studied art and design and want to go on to a foundation course or simply develop new skills.

This is a Summer School only short course running only once a year. We encourage early bookings to secure your place.

Materials

On campus

  • Sketchbook with personal visual references and inspirations such as drawings, photographs, cut-outs from magazines etc
  • Basic materials are supplied, but you may want to bring your own material for printing

Tutor

Berni Yates

Berni Yates has over 30 years experience in the Fashion and Textiles sector – she has worked for Central Saint Martins for the past 20 years – her specialist area is Fashion Knitwear.

Berni has many years of experience supporting young people with access and progression onto Art Foundation and Fashion, Textiles and Jewellery Degree courses at CSM and other HEIs.

She has been instrumental in setting up community Arts projects PAN UK, to support Art Education.

Berni is currently lead on Knowledge Exchange for the Fashion programmes at CSM, working across the sector talking to industry experts and weaving new knowledge into the curriculum.

She has a wealth of Insights into the Fashion and Textiles industry and continues to consult and design her own label of bespoke knit garments. She is also joint course director for Textiles Portfolio short course at CSM.

Berni has a broad knowledge of learning and teaching at CSM and UAL more broadly, so is well placed to help with portfolio building.

Maria Cuji

Maria Cuji is a textile designer and an alumna of the BA Textile Design and MA Biodesign programmes at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London.

Her practice explores the relationship between textiles, natural fibres, traditional craftsmanship and experimental materials, creating one-of-a-kind sculptural wearable pieces that combine cultural heritage with contemporary design. Material exploration, sustainability and innovation are at the heart of her work.

Maria works with community organisations across London, sharing a wide range of textile and craft techniques while encouraging creativity, confidence and hands-on learning.

Before studying at Central Saint Martins, Maria spent many years in Ecuador, travelling throughout the country to learn traditional making techniques directly from artisans. These experiences continue to shape her creative practice and form the foundation of her approach to design and materials.

Throughout her career, Maria has been committed to supporting young people in developing creative skills and confidence, helping them progress into further and higher education in textiles, fashion and the creative industries.
