Digital Photography for 11 to 15 Year Olds Short Course

Course description

This lively and informative course is suitable for both beginners and those who have a basic understanding of photography, who wish to have greater creative control over their equipment and develop an awareness of the essential picture-making skills applicable to the medium..

During the course there will be informal lectures and workshops that introduce both the creative and technical possibilities of your camera as you learn how to use the various settings and functions by responding to briefs. These will be supplemented by slide lectures on historical and contemporary artwork which explore the aesthetics of photography.

Please note you will need an Adobe account set up prior to the course start. There is no cost, please see the Materials tab for details.

Who should attend this course?

This course is ideal for 11 to 15 year olds with an interest in photography.

Level: Beginners

Clear, easy to understand lessons:

  • Our tutors will explain things in easy to understand, accessible English. If they need to use any special terminology they will make sure they explain what they mean.
  • New methods will be shown to students through live demonstrations, in a way thats crystal clear and easy to understand.

Please note 11 - 15 year old learners are not allowed to leave the site during the day. There is a canteen onsite, with a wide range of meals and snacks available. Alternatively you may wish to bring a packed lunch with you. There are microwaves available to re heat food if you wish and if you bring a reusable water bottle with you there are a number of places to refill it.

Digital Credentials (badges and certificates)

How to book

Topics covered:

  • Basic camera operation
  • Focus control
  • File quality (JPG vs. RAW)
  • Exposure and light meters
  • Composition and framing techniques
  • Creative use of shutter speeds & apertures
  • How to use a flash & filters

There will be an assignment set at the end of each talk to give you the chance to put these into practice by going out and taking photographs and receiving valuable feedback from your tutor.

Materials

Please bring the following to the first session:

  • A digital camera and its instruction manual
  • A notebook and pen

IMPORTANT - Adobe ID Login for Short Course Students

Students will need to create an account with Adobe (unless you already have one) in order to access the Adobe suite at the college – instructions are included below. You will need to use a personal email address to create this. If you already have an account with Adobe, please make sure you bring your login details with you on the first day of the course.

Please note:

  • The software will only be accessible when logged into a UAL networked computer
  • The same account can be used outside of the University, but software will only be accessible through a personal paid subscription that students will need to set up independently
  • You can still create an account on the day but doing this beforehand will save time and avoid delays to the start of the class.
  • If you already have an Adobe ID/ subscription you can use this on your short course rather than setting up a new account.
  • During this course you may be using Adobe Photoshop. If you do not already have Photoshop, you can sign up for a free 7 day trial of Adobe Creative Cloud. Please note a credit card is required to register for the free trial. The subscription must be cancelled on the date provided by Adobe if you do not wish to continue onto a paid account.

To create an account students will need to:

  • Go to Adobe Sign in page.
  • Select ‘Create an account’
  • Enter your details and select ‘Create account’
