Course description

Course overview

Substance Painter is a 3D painting software, allowing creatives to paint directly onto a 3D model to build up 3D materials using filters, smart materials, brushes and generators. This short course will give you an insight into how you can use Substance Painter for texturing garments; with transferable skills you can apply to any objects.

Students will be shown how to prepare and export OBJ 3D files and UV maps from supporting software such as CLO3D and how to import these into Substance Painter.

We’ll look at the technique of texture ‘baking’ and explore the different texture maps that you can generate in Substance Painter, testing different creative tools you can use such as brushes, smart materials, filters, and generators to create your own materials.

You’ll be working on projects that include fabric washes, stitches and customised logo buttons, and progress to work with layers, masks and alpha channels to understand the power of using a non-destructive workflow.

By the end of the course, you’ll be shown how to render a garment inside Substance and how to export the material maps for use in other software.
