Do you want to discover how to report from the catwalk shows, co-ordinate a fashion shoot and create cutting edge fashion content? Do you dream of working for a fashion magazine or becoming a successful fashion blogger or influencer? Are you passionate about fashion and love writing? If you are interested in taking the first steps towards an exciting career in fashion journalism, or just enjoy fashion writing, then this is the course for you.

Well written fashion content and excellent interview technique skills will help you get ahead, whether you want to write for a magazine, create content for a fashion brand or start your own fashion podcast.

Who should take this course?

The course is aimed at those looking for an insider's overview of fashion journalism, for those looking to change career, those who want to develop and improve their writing skills, or for those who just want to test the waters and see if this could be a field they might want to work in. This course would work well paired together with an additonal fashion styling course.

Fashion Journalism could the be spring board needed for those wanting to get published online or in print, those wanting to start their own online platform, and those looking to get a job with a magazine or fashion brand.

Entry requirements:A good grasp of the English language and an eye for fashion.

Level: Beginners - no prior knowledge of the subject is needed, although fashion experience is of course always welcome.

Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older

Topics covered include:

  • Fashion news – how to wow your readers with the most cutting edge stories
  • Fashion features – how to choose exciting subjects for long reads, and how to keep your reader reading
  • Essential interview technique – important tips on face to face interviews, from coming up with questions to navigating your first interview
  • Fashion shoots – how to style and produce a shoot from conception to publication, and how to come up with original creative ideas
  • Fashion and social media – fashion’s changing role online, and how you can be part of it
  • The pitch – how to come up with compelling content and get it published
  • Getting a job in fashion – the dos and don’ts and what jobs are actually out there
  • Knowing your audience – from podcasts to moving image to features writing, you need to know who your audience is

Journalists may have to commission fashion shoots and promote themselves and their work on social media, so being able to choose eye catching images, take photographs and style shoots is increasingly important.

Although this course focuses on writing, we also cover styling, how to chose photographs, and look at the importance of fashion film and video.

Materials

Please bring with you to the first session:

  • Pens, pencils and writing paper
  • 3 fashion magazines of your choice
  • Laptop (if you have one)

You will also need for the last two sessions:

  • A2 paper
  • Prit stick glue
  • Scissors
  • 4 old magazines for collage
