A follow-on from 'Introduction to millinery,' this millinery course will help to develop your understanding of design, proportion, balance and the application of colour, taking your millinery knowledge a stage further. You'll learn how to select from a wide range of woven and knitted fabrics, felts and straw for millinery, and how to apply these to your designs. The selection and use of foundation materials is also covered.
You'll also be introduced to the art of draping fabrics either as a trimming or for a whole hat, along with techniques for blocking felt, straw and foundation materials to help you develop your manipulation skills.
By the time you've finished the course, you should have completed a parasisal and a cocktail hat.
Intermediate. You should have completed the beginners level course or have equivalent experience.

Jessica Broas is an American born, London based milliner. Jessica studied Fine Art at Rhode Island School of Design in the States and Goldsmiths College in the UK. Her artwork has been shown around the world in numerous group and solo shows. Jessica's influences are broad and eclectic, from clouds to the sculpture of Christo, from the flamboyant designs of Schiaparelli to the flora and fauna of the streets of Hackney, where she resides. Juxtaposing these influences; combining the traditional and the contemporary has remained central to her work. Personal history is a major source of inspiration. Jessica worked for Jeff Koons in his New York City studio in the early Noughties. It is here that she discovered the importance of materials, their ability to convey meaning and how they affect a finished artwork. Having worked in architecture, written and performed in an all-girl rock band Jessica took a step sideways and undertook a personal journey; learning couture millinery from Rose Cory and how to harness ones creative influences and artistic vision into a wearable hat from milliner Piers Atkinson along the way. Pushing boundaries and innovation with materials, design and craft in millinery is a driving force in her work. Chloe Scrivener began her career with the Queen’s former milliner Philip Somerville. She then continued her training at Philip Treacy where she worked in both his London studio and assisted at haute couture shows in London, Paris and New York. In 2000 she began her own millinery business and quickly obtained commissions from a diverse range of clients including theEnglish National Opera where she created millinery for Antony Mingella’s Madam Butterfly. Recent projects have included commission from other milliners such as Bailey Tomlin and Piers Atkinson and teaching projects in conjunction with the Barbican’s Future Beauty: 30 years of Japanese Fashion exhibition.
In order to fully participate in the practical exercises please bring the following materials/equipment to the first class:
- Needles (millinery sizes, 6, 7 & 8 or a mixed pack of 3-9)
- Tape measure
- Fabric and paper scissors
- 100% Polyester thread in black and white (100m rolls will be sufficient)
- Tailors chalk or tailors pencil
- Household pins (26 x 0.75mm)
- Dressmaking pins (30 x 0.60mm)
- Cling film
- Pencil, pen, sharpener, rubber and ruler
Other useful items you may wish to bring include:
- Wire cutters
Please allow at least £40 to purchase fabrics and trimmings for this course. Advice will be given on the selection and purchase of these items and participants will be encouraged to visit suppliers to make appropriate purchases before or after each class.
