Originally from Thailand, Chayanit is a student on the BA (Hons) Textile Design course at Chelsea College of Arts. The location of the campus in central London was a big factor in his choice, along with the artistic inspiration that can be found on the doorstep.

London is a truly vibrant city with an abundance of art galleries. Chelsea College of Arts is  right opposite the Tate Britain, while Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey are just around the corner.

UAL has an extremely friendly working environment. We have our own working area for second year students and I’ve found that being constantly surrounded by friends has great benefits. I’m more motivated whilst working among peers!

What’s great about studying at UAL is the fact we are allowed to use many of the facilities at the different sites and colleges.

As a Chelsea student, I can access the Central Saint Martins library. This has been really helpful for me when I have been doing research for my projects.

A project that I’m particularly proud of was making samples for the Premiere Vision fair in Paris. It allowed me to think in a more professional context, considering the weight of the materials and colour combinations. The aim was to design six different samples, ultimately forming a collection. I even managed to sell two of these samples at the fair!

My advice to new students would be to soak up your surroundings. At UAL, you will experience many different aspects of visual arts and design. Choosing your course doesn’t mean that you can’t develop other artistic disciplines. Photography, film, fashion design, pattern cutting, ceramics, woodwork and metalwork, painting and graphic design have all played an important role in enhancing and developing my textile project.
