Katrien Goossens is an Interior Designer who studied with us at Chelsea College of Arts. She and 7 other past short course students are exhibiting in Dezeen’s Virtual Design Festival’s Student Show. Read on to learn about Katrien’s background and her journey to becoming an Interior Designer.

What did you enjoy most about your course?
I loved the teaching methods, the drive and the enthusiasm of the lecturers which was just so infectious. Being in the heart of London also made it very special.

How has this experience benefitted your career and personal development?
I can now combine the knowledge from the course with my project management skills and my creativity to adapt to a client’s needs with more confidence.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about taking a short course Camberwell, Chelsea, or Wimbledon Colleges of Arts?
I would definitely recommend taking a short course at UAL Colleges of Arts. The quality of the teaching is very high and you learn a lot of practical skills needed for the industry in a reasonable amount of time.

What do you believe is integral to the work of an artist or designer, in any discipline?

·       Listen to your client
·       Be brave, yet flexible
·       Learn to manage budgets and programmes
·       Optimise your design to fit more than one goal
·       Always stay curious and open to learning new things

The biggest thrill is when your client knows that you get them. That little ‘aha’ moment is really worth all the work you put into the concepts and designs.

What 3 words best describe your short course experience at Chelsea?
Mind-blowing, quality and fun.

Anything else you would like to add?
I want to thank the lecturers, the staff in the college, and all my fellow students for all the support we had in our group. We are now taking part as a student collective in the Dezeen Virtual Design Festival. This was only possible thanks to the great enthusiasm and team spirit of everyone involved.
