For aspiring fashion designers, pattern cutting is one of the most important skills to develop. It forms the foundation of garment design, helping designers to transform creative ideas into professionally developed patterns and finished collections.
The Complete Womenswear Pattern Cutting Short Course at London College of Fashion is designed to help students build these essential industry skills through practical workshops and hands-on learning over 20 sessions.
We spoke to Stephen who joined the course while launching his own fashion brand and was looking to strengthen his technical expertise.
Last year, Stephen decided to start his own label and quickly realised the value of pattern cutting in bringing his designs to life. For Stephen, understanding how patterns are developed is fundamental to working successfully as a designer.
"It's the core of everything in this industry and as a designer I think I cannot lead the team very well if I don't know how to do pattern cutting myself."
The course introduces students to industry-standard blocks, pattern manipulation techniques and the process of developing patterns for a wide range of womenswear garments, from shirts and dresses to trousers and outerwear.
Developing skills with expert guidance
Throughout the course, students learn how to analyse designs, develop accurate patterns and understand fit, style lines and silhouette. Stephen credits much of his progress to the support of his tutor, Annie.
"Our tutor Annie, she's a very nice person and I always ask her lots of questions. She's very patient and always spots if I don't get it - she will repeat everything and make sure I'm on the right track."
The supportive learning environment helped him build confidence while developing increasingly complex pattern cutting techniques.
Supporting creative and professional growth
Alongside his studies, Stephen has been developing ideas for his own collections and applying what he learns directly to his work. One of the aspects he values most is the course's strong connection to industry practice.
The technical skills and industry knowledge he has gained are already helping him move his brand forward.
"I'm making my second collection right now, so the course is really supporting me through all these developments at this stage."
Turning ideas into reality
Designed for aspiring professionals and ambitious makers, The Complete Womenswear Pattern Cutting Short Course helps students build the confidence and technical expertise needed to create professional-standard patterns for their own designs.
Whether you're looking to develop your portfolio, launch a fashion business or deepen your understanding of garment design, the course provides a strong foundation for the next step in your creative journey.
