Post-Grad Community is a programme which provides access to cross-college and cross-disciplinary opportunities, events and networking for postgraduate taught and research students at UAL.
Due to the current coronavirus pandemic and UAL temporarily closing it's buildings, the team has been forced to cancel all planned physical activity but are currently looking at ways we can collaborate with our students remotely.
Open Call
One of the ways we are looking to do this is through doing this open call to UAL current postgrads and recent alumni so to connect with those who might be interested in showcasing their work at home, documenting it and perhaps holding a programme of online private views/ Q&As.
Our call out is inspired by Hans Ulrich Obrist’s article The Kitchen Show for Paris Review in 2014. It describes how he went about curating an exhibition in his kitchen and the alternative ways in which artists made and installed work in this non-gallery setting
"I didn’t have access to an exhibition space in a gallery or a museum, of course, but I did rent an old flat in St. Gallen. I never cooked. I never even made tea or coffee because I always ate out. The kitchen was just another space where I kept stacks of books and papers. This was exactly the feature that Fischli, Weiss and Boltanski had independently noticed. The non-utility of my kitchen could be transformed into its utility for art. To do a show there would mix art and life, naturally". - Hans Ulrich Obrist
Why get involved?
This would be a wonderful opportunity to open up your networks to the 6,000+ UAL postgrad students and alumni on our mailing list through promotion via our online social channels. It will inspire other postgrads to take a positive approach to producing and making work at home and most importantly, it can support your well-being during our forced isolation period and let others know that they are not alone.
What can you propose?
Art work can be in any medium you feel appropriate, you must only use materials you already have. We do not want you taking risks and breaking isolation/social distancing protocols for material sourcing, use this as a creative challenge!
We can publish videos through our YouTube Channel/sound works can be supplied through a Sound Cloud link and can be embedded into a web page to include texts. Photographs need to be landscape and hi res.
Why not film a performance piece, record a cookery lesson, put together a podcast or do some live painting/drawing?
Accompanying texts will need to have basic details about where you are self-isolating, are you at home alone, with flat mates, family, pets? Are you overseas or still in student halls?
Deadline to apply
If you are interested in being involved please email PGCommunity@arts.ac.uk with your proposal alongside any images before 1 April 2020 (ACCEPTING SUBMISSIONS FOR A SHORT WHILE AFTER THE DEADLINE). We are happy to receive any questions you may have too!
