Following on from a Postgraduate Community Passagen’s reading group session at UAL, Counterpoints Arts wish to commission UAL postgraduate students or alumni to work with the Counterpoints Arts’ team in relation to Who Are We? at Tate Exchange during May 2018.
Who Are We? is a cross-platform arts initiative involving a mixed team of artists, academics, activists, curators and cultural workers. Our shared area of interest is migration and (dis)placement together with a range of associated sub-themes linked to this social phenomenon and field of research and practice.
Brief 1
- For Who Are We? 2018 we wish to work with a practitioner or group of practitioners to help design and navigate the display and exhibition aesthetic across the 5th floor of Who Are We? at Tate Exchange, Tate Modern. You would work with the Who Are We? production team and with related creative partners and artists. This is an opportunity to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team on an experimental, boundary-pushing project, where design principles and methodologies are in dynamic conversation with the subject matter and dynamic content resulting in a shared ambition to engage the public in ‘participatory’ activities.
- The scale, scope and cost of the commission will be agreed in conversation with the Who Are We? team.
- Please see the initial Who Are We? outline on Tate Exchange site: http://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/tate-exchange/workshop/who-are-we-art-migration-and-production-democracy
Brief 2
- Who Are We? Tate Exchange 2018 wish to commission a practitioner or collaborative practitioners– designers or visual artists – to co-create/design an installation running across the 5th floor of Tate Exchange, reflecting upon and animating Liberty’s (Promoting Civil Liberties – Protecting Human Rights) most recent publication: A Guide to the Hostile Environment. We imagine this immersive installation as a creative adaptation of the legal policy and activism shaping this urgent publication. The goal is to create an arts-led installation, which will engage the public in dynamic conversations enabling intimate and civic awareness of how current ‘hostile environment’ policies have created discriminatory and racialised practices, impacting on both migrants and citizens alike.
- Who Are We? is committed to co-producing cutting edge, imaginative and socially engaged work on the wider thematic of migration and social democracy. The practitioner/practitioners would work closely with the Who Are We? production team, with Liberty and with other engaged actors. The scale, scope and cost of the commission will be agreed in conversation with the Who Are We? team.
