Congratulations on your offer to study the Level 3: International Introduction to the Study of Design, Media and Screen. We’re excited to welcome you to the UAL School of Pre-degree Studies at London College of Communication and support you as you take your next step into creative education.
This full-time course is designed to prepare you for undergraduate study across Design, Media and Screen, combining practical studio work with critical thinking and professional development.
Through a mix of live briefs, collaboration and independent practice, you’ll develop the skills, confidence and portfolio needed to progress to degree-level study at London College of Communication.

What will I cover on this course?
On this course, you will have the opportunity to:
- Work on live industry briefs, including a Culture and Heritage exhibition project developed with a professional photographer.
- Take part in international study trips, including a collaborative exhibition with students from Paris College of Art.
- Build a professional portfolio tailored to your chosen specialism across Design, Media or Screen.
- Develop both practical and critical skills, preparing you for areas from Graphic Design to Film, Games and Journalism.
- Collaborate across disciplines on shared projects that reflect real creative industry practice.
- Receive dedicated progression support, including UCAS guidance and portfolio development.
What does a typical week look like on this course?
You will study a combination of studio practice and contextual learning across the week.
- Around 10 hours per week are dedicated to studio practice, where you’ll develop hands-on creative skills and respond to briefs in a professional studio environment
- 3 hours per week focus on critical and contextual studies, exploring design history, theory and professional context to support your creative work
- Up to 5.5 hours per week are available for language development and academic English support, helping you meet the requirements for progression to undergraduate study
- You’ll take part in regular tutorials, including one-to-one and small group sessions, as well as a weekly Course Leader drop-in, to review your progress and plan next steps
The rest of your time is spent on independent study, where you’ll develop your projects using UAL’s technical facilities, workshops and academic support.
Gallery and museum visits are also embedded into the course, helping to inspire your work and connect your practice to the wider creative and cultural world.
What's the social and creative community like on this course?
You’ll be part of a diverse and collaborative creative community within the UAL School of Pre-degree Studies.
Students regularly collaborate across Design, Media and Screen pathways. For example, the Culture and Heritage exhibition project brought students together to respond to a live industry brief, culminating in a group exhibition.
Beyond the course, you can get involved in:
- Arts Students' Union (Arts SU), with over 50 student-run clubs and societies.
- Freshers’ Festival, helping you settle into student life.
- Student-led projects, supported through the Student Initiative Fund.
International students also benefit from specialist English language support and dedicated events to help you settle into life in London.
