27 January is Holocaust Memorial Day, a day which was established to remember the victims of the Holocaust and all subsequent genocides.

This year is the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.

Why is Holocaust Memorial Day important?

Holocaust Memorial Day is an opportunity to remember the atrocities of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides, whilst also fostering education and encouraging reflection.

The statement of commitment created for Holocaust Memorial Day includes a commitment to remember all victims of Nazi Persecution, as well as victims of all genocides.

The theme for 2025 is ‘For a better future’, with the Holocaust Memorial Day website encouraging people to “speak up against Holocaust and genocide denial and distortion; challenge prejudice; encourage others to learn about the Holocaust and more recent genocides.”
