What we do

We're the Student Learning and Engagement (SLE) team. We work with undergraduate and postgraduate students, course teams and UAL services to enhance students’ learning and engagement.

We do this by working with students who are not engaging with their studies to work out what support they need to reconnect with their learning.

How we can support students

Our approach is supportive, compassionate, and centred around helping students succeed – not around monitoring or penalising. We can help by:

  • checking in if we’ve noticed students have stopped engaging with their course
  • talking through any challenges affecting their studies
  • connecting students with specialist support at UAL
  • working with students and their course team to create a plan for re-engagement
  • following up with students where ongoing support would be helpful.

When might students hear from us

Undergraduate and postgraduate students may be contacted by the SLE team if their course team has concerns about their engagement or attendance.

This could include:

  • missed tutorials or teaching sessions
  • limited engagement with their studies
  • returning after a break in studies, such as Time Out
  • experiencing personal or academic circumstances that are barriers to learning.

What happens next?

Our initial contact with students will be by text or by phone. We'll meet students face to face or online, whichever is most convenient.

We're not a medical, mental health or counselling service, but if that's the kind of support students need, we'll help them find the right people and make it as easy as possible to get there.
