Mike Orwell

Biography

Mike is the Executive Producer of the Storyteller Hub and an award-winning digital producer and exec. He has specialised in storytelling across many different digital mediums, telling stories from science, history, art and culture.

At the BBC, Mike was the editorial lead for a big data collaboration between the BBC audience and UK researchers. He led groundbreaking projects exploring social class, psychology and evolutionary ethics, which led to the Great British Class Calculator and the BBC’s first ever data-driven, branching-narrative documentary, among many other innovative storytelling outputs.

He became a digital commissioning editor for BBC Knowledge & Learning in 2016 and oversaw a large production slate of digital content.

His interactive graphic novel, ‘Tell Me Your Secrets’ allowed you to participate in secret World War Two meetings and create alternative global histories became a Sheffield Documentary Festival winner in 2017.

He has collaborated with artists such as Javaad Alipoor and Theatre Uncut to create digital and interactive versions of their work. He recently led production on major immersive works for Unit9 & Marshmallow Laser Feast and continues his filmmaking practice with his production collective.

He’s currently fascinated by the opportunities presented by immersive and virtual production techniques to storytelling and exploring the discourse around generative AI production.
