Biography

StevieRay Latham is a multidisciplinary artist and researcher based in London, UK. Working across drawing, painting, print, sound and moving image, his practice explores landscape as both subject and construct, examining how technology, mythology, memory and cultural narratives shape our understanding of place. He holds an MA in Fine Art from Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, and is currently undertaking a practice-based PhD at the London College of Communication, where he is a member of the Creative Research in Sound Arts Practice (CRiSAP) research community.

His doctoral research, Sonic Maritime Psychogeography: Sound, Landscape and the Cultural Geography of the Shipping Forecast, investigates how sound, communication technologies and cultural narratives shape the ways in which we imagine, encounter and remember place. Sound is central to his research, which combines field recording, composition and site-based artistic practice to explore the relationship between mediated and embodied experiences of landscape.

Alongside his visual arts practice, Latham has worked as a musician and composer for over fifteen years, producing original soundtracks and soundscapes for film, developing experimental approaches to folk and electronic music and performing live as well as releasing two albums, four EPs and multiple collaborative works. His work has been exhibited and performed across the UK and Europe, including at Beaconsfield, Southwark Park Gallery and Neurotitan, Berlin. He has undertaken international artistic residencies, including in Pontianak, Indonesia, and has composed scores and soundscapes for moving-image works presented at venues including NewBridge Project, Exeter Phoenix and Left Bank Leeds. He is also a member of Critical Edge Collective, a London-based collective fostering public engagement with research and international artistic collaborations with artists and collectives in Stockholm, Oslo and Berlin.
