Biography

Sophie Kabangu is a PhD researcher based at Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon College of Arts (CCW), researching Black British protest and organising. Her research, Organising Black British Protest: Infrastructures of Care, Labour and Assembly from the Black People’s Day of Action (1981) to Black Lives Matter (2020), explores the often overlooked forms of care, labour, organisation and collective assembly that make protest possible and sustain it beyond the visible moment of demonstration.

Her research brings together archival research, autoethnography and Long Table discussions to explore how organising practices, knowledge and relationships are shared, remembered and transformed across generations. She is particularly interested in Black British protest histories, Black feminism, collective memory, visual culture, care and the sustainability of organising.

Alongside her PhD, Sophie has a background in sociology, human rights and migration studies, and her wider creative and research interests sit at the intersection of art, protest, Black Britishness and collective organising.
