Rob Vinall

Biography

Rob is a Senior Lecturer and practitioner working across interior, spatial, and architectural design at University of the Arts London. He has over a decade of experience in higher education, teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, with a particular emphasis on studio-based learning, practice-led pedagogy, and student experience. He holds an MA from the Royal College of Art and works in architectural practice and set design alongside his academic career.

Rob’s research is practice-led and focuses on the pedagogic role of space, materials, and making within creative education. His work examines how studio environments and modes of working shape confidence, participation, and belonging, particularly at moments of transition. He is interested in creative pedagogies that explore experimentation and in how space or practice can support agency in students. This research is shared through conferences, workshops, publications, and pedagogic projects embedded within teaching contexts.

Alongside this, Rob’s research explores the intersections of identity and space, with a particular interest in queer spatial phenomenology. This strand of work considers how bodies encounter, negotiate, and are shaped by spatial conditions, atmospheres, and materialilty, and how identity is formed and expressed through spatial performance and ritual.
