Dr Rebecca Binns

Biography

Rebecca Binns is an Associate Lecturer in Contextual & Theoretical Studies for BA design students at LCC, while also acting as a facilitator on the Creative Unions unit at CSM. She also teaches Critical and Historical Studies at Kingston School of Art. She formerly worked as a set designer, providing installations on the Free Party scene, while also working at venues such as Heaven and Brixton Fridge.

Having completed an MA in Art History at UCL, Rebecca received a London Research Studentship grant to undertake a PhD on Gee Vaucher of Crass at LCC.

Her monograph of the work and life of the artist, designer and countercultural icon, Gee Vaucher, was published by Manchester University Press in 2022. She has written articles and book chapters and presented papers on Vaucher, Anne Bean, Rock Against Racism, pub rock and the Stop the City Protests at events such as the Women in Revolt conference at Tate Britain and in journals such as Contemporary British History. She is a peer reviewer for the Punk & Post Punk journal, for which she co-edited a special art edition in 2020. She is a former news writer for Source magazine, and continues to write on art, photography and cultural history for commercial publications.

She is currently working on an exhibition with the Leamington Spa Art Gallery and Museum about the history of grassroots protest in the West Midlands and how this is manifest in art and design objects and ephemera.
