Nelson Diplexcito

Biography

Nelson Diplexcito is a painter who has exhibited his paintings and drawings in galleries and museums both nationally and internationally. Since graduating in 1990, he has seen his paintings and drawings as an outcome of an intense visual encounter with the world. That painting is a form of quarrying of the image and that looking, is an active visual enquiry, that leads to seeing. That the journey towards visualisation is singular – that is that it is made by the painter alone, but it also can be shared, collectively experienced and understood through a form of recognition by the viewer.

The facture of painting is only half the story; the way in which painting attains this form of recognition is through a delicate form of empiricism, action and counter-action, in order that a painter can intercede authentically with its object. Through trial and contest, the aim is to produce an image that looks back at you and sustains your gaze, possesses intention, conviction, energy and a form of resistance. The intention in his paintings are to attain through visual phenomena that which is often said conversationally, “I see what you mean”.

On the 18th May 2023 the first monograph of his work, Nelson Diplexcito: Orpheus Street Paintings was launched at TM Gallery in London. In 2024, Nelson Diplexcito was asked to be on the judging panel of the Beep Painting Prize in association with Elysium Gallery.
