Biography
Nelson Correia is a journalist and film & television researcher and practitioner with an interest in screen production processes, histories and representations. He recently completed a PhD in Creative Industries at Edinburgh Napier University jointly with the University of Edinburgh, in which he investigated historical shifts in screen career opportunities and production patterns in Scotland as a UK national screen production centre. Nelson’s PhD research was developed in collaboration with the Moving Image Archive of the National Library of Scotland and awarded a scholarship from the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities. Nelson has over 20 years of professional experience in the media and communications sector, previously working in factual television production, documentaries and corporate communications in the UK, and as a television news reporter and editor in Brazil. He also taught digital media production at the undergraduate level.Nelson’s fellowship research at the AKO Storytelling Institute examines how migrant communities from superdiverse backgrounds are depicted in contemporary UK television drama, and explores how storytelling can improve their on-screen representation. The research focuses on high-end series made for Public Service Broadcasters (PSBs) and looks into the experiences of communities such as those from Central and Eastern Europe, South America, the Middle East, East Asia, and non-Anglophone African nations, providing a framework for those who influence creative storytelling decisions on creating more inclusive and relatable on-screen representations of the UK’s superdiverse communities.
