Biography

Nathalie Hankir is a British-born, Swedish-Lebanese PhD researcher at Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London. Her research focuses on rural hunters in Småland, Sweden, exploring how value-systems are shaped and lived in rural environments. The 'good life', 'luxury', and pursuits of happiness are all explored and understood from these hunting men, highlighting an alternative, 'anti-market', anti-consumerist approach to what is deemed as 'luxurious'. Foundational Nordic cultural philosophies, that are rooted in Lutheran beliefs, are further explored and emphasised as important cultural factors in how these phenomena are understood and experienced. Thus, luxury shifts from temporary escape to everyday practice that is maintained and managed as a community.
