Dr Matthew Crowley

Biography

I am a writer, researcher, art practitioner, and educator.

My work explores ‘critical practice’ and employs action research in the development of experimental pedagogic approaches and curricula. The focus of the work is the development of conscious practitioners, using practice-based research to introduce applied critical theory, philosophies of art, design, and education, and socio-cultural theory to enable students to produce a framework of understanding that will shape their ongoing work. Using an iterative approach of knowing-doing-telling, my teaching focuses on how to think in and through situations, not what to think in a specific moment.

This aligns with my own creative practice, which encompasses academic, creative, experimental, and experiential writing to explore the potentialities of writing as practice. I am currently developing ‘dialectic anamnesis’ as a theoretical framework which employs immersive practice and wa/ondering as a research method to engage with futures that exist as past presents which were always destined to return.
