Dr Marilia Hernandes Jardim

Biography

I am a semiotician, cultural researcher and educator. With a previous background as a visual and stage artist, I hold an MPhil in Communication and Semiotics (PUC-SP, Brazil), specialising in the Paris School’s visual semiotics and semiotics of interactions. As a member of the Socio-semiotic Research Centre (CPS, Brazil), I cultivated eclectic research interests in discourse studies, including political communication, communications and media, and urban studies. My PhD in Communications and Media (CAMRI / University of Westminster) bridges my expertise in French semiotics, religious studies, and post-colonial theory, investigating how contemporary discourses construct the Other through media texts.

My present work is interdisciplinary, exploring the intersection of French, Russian, and American semiotic paradigms in dialogue with poststructuralism, phenomenology, and religious studies. My latest outputs explore the relationship between natural languages and cultural outputs, such as theories, knowledge forms, and artificial intelligence.
