Liza Betts

Biography

Dr Liza Betts is a Senior Lecturer and Researcher in Cultural/Historical Studies at UAL: London College of Fashion. Her work and research focuses broadly on costume and practices of dress, social class, gender and representation. Her PhD research drew heavily on a 15 year career in the field of film and tv costuming to explore how fictional working class lives are costumed. Current work continues to critique representations of social class, to explore costume practices, class barriers to creative education, and to examine the intersections of gender across football, including terrace cultures and music subcultures.
She has been invited to discuss her work on on social class, fashion and football on BBC Radio and across mainstream news and fashion media where she regularly contributes to articles on dress and popular culture.
She has presented in an academic context worldwide and published work on social class, masculinity, femininity, costume, clothing, representation and football.
She is also co-creator of a cross-creative arts institution, ‘Solidarity Space’ - an online meeting space for working class academics.
