Biography
Laurence Noga is an artist curator and writer. My research explores Geometry, Systems, Collage, and Assemblage. Born in London, attended Wimbledon School of Art in 1981 – 4, Byam Shaw (Central St Martins) 1990 -1.Laurence Noga’s Paintings, mixed media, collaged and painted constructions are low reliefs recalling works from the 1920s such as Kurt Schwitters’ (Merz 1925 1 Relief Blue Square 1925) . Noga constructs and assembles imperfect geometries. They have a complexity of colour and compositions. An eclectic inter-connectivity of the found and painted. These, ‘mixed media’ works have an open–ended language of shape, colour and surface, that play with aesthetics’ of balance and imbalance, creating a kind of industrialised and personal memory scape. Building an approach to the symbolic and the formal. Portals to other times. Utilising abandoned or found objects in his father’s garage, to help make the choices of colour and structure.Hundreds of packets, washers, door- knobs, sheet music, menus, wood shapes, or tools. The choice of colour and structure often develops from his childhood memory. Left sitting in smoky jazz clubs listening to his mother sing. Or visiting his father’s restaurants such as Le Caprice. Noga is drawn towards the intangible and intimate nature between painting, collage, and assemblage, exploring and utilizing unexpected combinations of multi-level colour and surface construction. Physical processes fluctuate between instinctive collisions of geometry and the unpredictability/predictability of colour relationships.
Shortlisted for the John Moores Painting Prize in 2018. He belongs to the APT community of artists in South London.
