Kate Terry

Biography

Kate Terry works with site-specific installation, drawing and sculpture. In her practice, Terry explores architectural space, geometry, ephemerality and colour. Working with site-specific thread installations, she draws on the rigorous formal language of Minimalism to explore questions of proprioception, spatial awareness, and phenomenological experience. Terry explores the interplay of the hand crafted in relation to repetitious, serial forms and actions. Using wood, steel, Perspex, and brass, she creates open geometric sculptures that foreground questions of weight, balance, and material presence. Drawing on the cultural associations of Farrow & Ball paint and the immediacy of brash fluorescent colours, her work investigates questions of taste, class, value and aesthetic hierarchy. Her drawings are based upon architectural spaces as proposals for installations and ‘plans for’ impossible works within real space.

Kate Terry holds and undergraduate degree in Sculpture from Manchester Metropolitan University and completed an MFA Fine Art at the University of Guelph, Canada.
She has exhibited widely nationally and internationally, solo exhibitions include Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum, USA, Broadway Gallery, Letchworth, Volker Diehl Cube, Berlin, and Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, Mercer Union, Toronto, Centre des Arts Actuels SKOL, Montreal, 1000000mph, London. Selected group shows include Alice Black, London, Sexauer, Berlin, Newlyn Art Gallery, Lismore Castle, Ireland, Contemporary Sculpture Fulmer. She co-curated New Relics, a large survey Sculpture exhibition at Thameside Gallery and Common Logic at IMT Gallery, London.
