Justyna Kabala

Biography

I am an artist-filmmaker working on films with communities. I am interested in sharing authorial control of creative projects through co-directing and collaborative filmmaking practice in an attempt to challenge the hierarchies and power relationships traditionally embedded in filmmaking production. My projects expand on the experiences of the individuals and communities through the co-creation of moving image work, aiming to build lasting relationships not only through filmmaking, but also ongoing dissemination activities in exhibitions, talks and film festival screenings, creatinig spaces for conversations with a range of audiences, organisations and other communities.

Since 2018, I have been working with various migrant and worker organisations locally and internationally on co-creating short films, which have been screened and exhibited in various cultural institutions including Lafayette Anticipacions (Paris, France), Somerset House (London, UK), Para Site (Hong Kong); our films have been screened at film festivals inclusing International Migration and Environmental Film Festival (Toronto, Canada), Doc.London Film Festival at Close-up Film Centre, or Matera Sports Film Festival (best foreign documentary award) Matera, Italy. One of our recent films, La Liga (2022) has been acquired for London's Screen Archives and Southwark Archives film collection.
