Biography
Jerome Ince-Mitchell is a London-based artist and educator whose practice explores how lived experience can be captured in art.Through explorations in painting, drawing, sculpture, installation and participatory processes, the continual creation, pursuit and transformation of opportunity is a core theme that is revealed through the work.
Central to his practice is Action Black, a methodology in which paint is placed into public and social environments before entering the studio. Applied to vinyl floor surfaces and activated through collective encounters, the paint records conversations, performances, celebrations and acts of participation before being stripped, reconfigured and transformed into paintings and sculptural works. Through this process, painting becomes an evolving material archive in which physical action, memory and social exchange remain inseparable from the forms they produce.
This methodology emerged from Royal Flush (2017–19), a project in which Jerome funded his Royal College of Art tuition through professional poker, examining the relationship between risk, strategy, chance and social mobility. More recent works reform these painted surfaces into semi-abstract floral forms that operate as metaphors for opportunity, suggesting that it is continually produced through relationships, labour, chance and time.
His work has been exhibited at the Whitechapel Gallery, Phillips Auction, Drawing Room, Guts Gallery, Niru Ratnam, Bomb Factory, Filet Space, Unit 1 Gallery, TOMA and Reading Museum. He holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art, a BA in Drawing from the University of the Arts London and an FDA in Illustration from the University of Brighton.
Alongside his artistic practice, Jerome is a Senior Lecturer in BA Fine Art Painting at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, and serves as Vice-Chair of a-n The Artists Information Company.
