Hazel Brill

Biography

Hazel Brill (b. 1991, London, UK) is a London-based multi-media artist represented by Workplace Gallery and Associate Lecturer in Fine Art at Oxford Brookes and MA Computational Arts at Camberwell College of Arts. Brill's practice spans sculpture, video, multimedia installation, kinetics, puppetry, bio-materials, sound, text, projection mapping and drawing, often weaving surreal narratives through theatrical installations populated by nonhuman characters. Recent projects have considered how fantasy shapes public responses to emerging technologies, with a focus on Gothic and Science Fiction. Brill recently passed a NuACT funded Creative Practice PhD at Newcastle University that explored agency in artificial life and animated sculpture, drawing on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Gothic Materialism, and Media Archaeology, alongside an exploration of the cultural reach of Frankenstein embedded in narratives of technology. Brill's interdisciplinary collaborations include researching living bio-materials in architecture with Newcastle's Hub for Biotechnology in the Built Environment, and working with Newcastle University's microbiology department to observe bacteria, resulting in a video shown at the Great North Museum's planetarium. She is keen to pursue further art-science collaborations.

Brill received her MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2017 and was awarded a Fellowship at Film London Artist Moving Image Network in 2019. She has exhibited globally, selected solo presentations include: Minute, Planetarium, Great North Museum, Newcastle (2025); Amber, Workplace, London (2024); Pincer, Workplace Foundation, Newcastle (2023); Pup & Blubber, Block 336, Brixton (2019); Shonisaurus Popularis, Turf Projects (2018). Awards include: Artagon III Award (2018), Boise Travel Scholarship Award (2017); Connect (2016) Mentor Award with Bedwyr Williams (2016); The Hatton Art Prize (2014).
