Biography

Chunyi Shen (沈醇怡) is a London-based transmedia artist and practice-based PhD researcher at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. She is also a research member of the Sonic Screen Lab.

Her practice explores the intersections of technology, emotion and embodied experience through moving image, sound, poetry, immersive environments and interactive installation. Bringing philosophical inquiry into dialogue with personal experience, she considers how perception, memory and a sense of self take shape through relationships with other people, nonhuman beings and technological systems. Her work engages with psychological experience, mental health and posthuman ethics, creating sensory encounters through which to explore care, coexistence and the boundaries between physical and virtual worlds.

Her doctoral research explores the relationship between technology and emotional experience, with a particular focus on Emotion-AI and embodied interaction. Through interactive installation, she investigates how people encounter and respond to computational interpretations of emotion, and how these exchanges may shape emotional expression, bodily awareness and self-understanding. Her artistic practice explores the possibilities of technology as a medium for emotional reflection, connection and experimentation, while attending to questions of care, agency and ethics.

Her background in film studies and screenwriting informs her approach to narrative and artistic research. She holds a BA in Drama and Film Literature and subsequently completed an MA in Digital Direction at the Royal College of Art. She has also completed professional training in psychological counselling, for which she received a certificate of completion.

Her work has been presented at IRCAM, an institute associated with the Centre Pompidou in Paris, as well as at Outernet London and London Craft Week, and she has been interviewed by CGTN Europe. She has also shared her research through international conferences and workshops spanning art, technology, media and emotion.

Alongside her artistic and research practice, she contributes to curatorial projects, interdisciplinary exchange and public dialogue on art and technology in the UK and China.
