Dr Caitlin Shepherd

Biography

Dr Caitlin Shepherd is an artist, researcher and educator. She is currently senior lecturer in Interaction Design Arts at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. Her work focusses on increasing diversity in the creative and cultural industries, with a particular interest in working class experience, barriers to participation in the creative industries, snappy and snapping body-minds and uncanny, intersectional feminism.

Her practice-research investigates how money, work, bodies, sexuality, gender, health and access to education shapes access to secure and equitable employment, and everything that is enabled (or not) through secure and fairly paid employment. Caitlin's PhD (2015 - 2023) examined how intersectional working-class experience is excluded from socially engaged art (and the creative industries at large) and studied how queer convivial listening practices might help to better understand and challenge such inequities and exclusions.

Caitlin's current praxis is focused on researching and articulating the connective tissue between the queer feminist uncanny body, haunting as an expression of chronic stress fractures, and symbolic and embodied forms of meaning making as methods of withdrawal from the value systems of Eurocentric hetero-patriarchal late capitalism.
