Biography
I am the Senior Lecturer in Biology and Living Systems on the MA Biodesign course at Central Saint Martins. I am an interdisciplinary researcher, educator, scientist and creator. As a Bioengineer, Chemist, and Biodesigner, I am interested in how we can utilise the wonders of the living world to regain ecological, human health and planetary equilibrium. I am passionate about improving our understanding of health and environmental issues. My objective is to gather and share knowledge, then translate into ethical and ecological innovative solutions.I hold a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Bristol and a PhD in Bioengineering from the London Centre of Nanotechnology, University College London. During this time, I demonstrated the superb potential of diamond as a material for neurological implants. I am a Fellow of the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, and I spent two years as a Postdoctoral Fellow within the Mechanics and Materials Unit at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST), Japan where developed technology to 3D print diamond for the first time.
My specific research interests are living interfaces - the boundaries between the living and the non-living. I am interested in why cells adhere to certain materials and how their environment influences their behaviour.
Within my role at CSM I am also an active member of the Living Systems Research Lab where I supervise multiple PhD students in the Biodesign Field. I welcome applications from prospective PhD candidates interested in biodesign. Please feel free to contact me to discuss potential research opportunities
